Tesla: will we all soon a battery at home? – TF1

The American manufacturer of electric cars Tesla want to change the way we consume energy. Nothing less! Thursday, its founder, Elon Musk, presented to the press a new battery prototype, not for automotive but for the home. This battery can store called Tesla powerwall electricity provided by solar panels or from the grid when it provides cheap electricity, especially during night hours. The battery can also be used in case of power failure, said Tesla.

Attached to the wall

The battery, designed to be fixed on the wall of a house or in a garage could make the houses equipped with photovoltaic panels completely independent of traditional power systems. “Our aim is to totally transform the global energy infrastructure to make it completely sustainable and without producing carbon emissions,” said Elon Musk to the press before unveiling the Tesla powerwall in suburban Los Angeles.

$ 3500

The battery will cost $ 3,500 when it is placed on the market US in the summer of 2015 and should be available worldwide next year. Germany should become a key market for this battery because this country is one of the best equipped in the world photovoltaic system, according to Elon Musk. But the battery could also be used in developing areas where power grids are often unreliable in spite of abundant solar energy. The battery could play “a role similar to the way mobile phones have replaced landlines,” said Mr. Musk.
Powerwall Tesla “will be a great step forward for the poorest communities of the world” added the head of Tesla because “it eliminates the need of electrical networks”.

Tesla had announced last year the construction of the world’s largest factory of lithium-ion batteries in the US state of Nevada, a giant plant 5 billion dollars in collaboration with the Japanese electronics giant Panasonic.
giant plant aims to bring down the price of batteries, so electric cars, one of the main barriers to their widespread adoption by the general public.

Although Tesla produces a relatively small number of vehicles it has become a star industry in particular because of its reputation for high quality.
Elon Musk dodged a question asking if the Tesla energy activity would supplant the automobile business, for which she is now the best known.
Elon Musk is a South African-born entrepreneur, who became a star for his success in both the car and in the private space industry (SpaceX). Previously, he had made his fortune through online payments company PayPal.
He holds 26.7% stake in Tesla, valued at over $ 7 billion on Wall Street.
