In Los Angeles, the minimum wage will increase from 9 to 15 dollars of … – The World

Activists applaud the announcement of the vote of the minimum wage increase by the City of Los Angeles, California, May 19, 2015.

The measure intends to fight against ” poverty of cancer “ in the capital of California. The city of Los Angeles voted Tuesday, 19 May an increase in the minimum wage, which will gradually increase from 9 to 15 dollars.

This increase will be spread gradually from July 2016 to 15 dollars in 2020 for companies with more than twenty-six and in 2021 for those under twenty-six employees, according to the project approved by the city council by fourteen votes in favor and one against. Some exceptions will circumvent the measure, as in some cases for employees under 18 years or for non-profit organizations.

Fear of “unintended consequences”

This provision will benefit “seven hundred thousand people plagued by economic difficulties” , said Councilman Paul Krekorian, while his colleague Mike Bonin assured that it would do face “a cancer in Los Angeles, poverty” .

The increase in the minimum wage was validated after eight months of intense debate and three studies to anticipate economic impact . The Republican Councilman Mitchell Englander, the only one who voted against the proposal, said he opposed it for fear that an increase in “unilateral” the minimum wage is the “unintended consequences such as job losses, reductions incurred in hours worked, and make it impossible for whole sectors to operate in the City of Los Angeles” .

The mayor of the city, Eric Garcetti, has meanwhile welcomed a proposal that will benefit the “million residents of Los Angeles living in poverty” .

A movement in New York

Several cities in the west coast, including Seattle and San Francisco, have already voted last year an increase in hourly wages, spread over several years, to 15 dollars an hour.

Washington and New York are also studying a possible increase at this level. A movement of the fast food employees to earn 15 dollars an hour started there are two and a half years in New York and spread to the entire country. In this city, the minimum wage is currently $ 8.75 per hour and must pass a modest $ 9 next year
