A new tantalizing promise. The Tesla media boss, billionaire Elon Musk, has offered a new resounding publicity stunt Thursday night in California by unveiling to the press the Tesla powerwall.

Sustainable Energy Independence

This revolutionary battery is able to store electricity from solar panels or from the grid when it provides cheap electricity, especially during the night hours, the company said. The battery can also be used in case of power failure.

The battery, designed to be fixed on the wall of a house or in a garage could thus make houses equipped with photovoltaic panels totally independent networks traditional power.

“Our goal is to transform the global energy infrastructure completely to make it completely sustainable and without producing carbon emissions,” said Elon Musk to the press before unveiling the Tesla powerwall in suburban Los Angeles.

The battery will cost $ 3,500 when it is in the US market in the summer of 2015 and will be available worldwide next year.

Germany should become a key market for this battery because this country is one of the best equipped in the world photovoltaic system, according to Elon Musk. But the battery could also be used in developing areas where power grids are often unreliable in spite of abundant solar energy.

The battery could “play a role similar to the way the phone mobile has replaced land lines, “Mr. Musk estimated.

Massive investments

The Tesla powerwall” will be a great step forward for the poorest communities of the world, “added Tesla boss because “it eliminates the need of electrical networks”.

Tesla had announced last year the construction of the world’s largest factory of lithium-ion batteries in the US state of Nevada, a giant plant 5 billion in collaboration with Japanese electronics giant Panasonic.

The giant plant aims to bring down the price of batteries, so electric cars, one of the main barriers to their widespread adoption by the general public.

Although Tesla produces a relatively small number of vehicles it has become a star industry in particular because of its reputation for high quality.

Elon Musk dodged a question asking if the Tesla energy activity would supplant the automobile business, for which it is best known today.
