Mordern Express: what risks for the Landes coast in case of stranding? – The Obs

The Modern Express continues its drift towards the French coast at a speed of one knot (1.8 km / hour). If the last attempt towing scheduled Monday did not result, the cargo 164 meters long should fail on the Landes coast. The Maritime Prefect for the Atlantic Emmanuel de Oliveira, warned:

The Modern Express will fail on the sandy coast of the Landes department between Monday night and Tuesday night, “and will be accompanied by” until the beaching point “.

The point and time will be specified stranding” the hours “but the 15 coastal municipalities Landes have already been alert, said the prefecture of the department.

A risk of oil spill?

The ship is carrying 3,600 tons of wood logs and construction machinery but also 300 tons of diesel propulsion. The maritime prefect assured that “not afraid spill at all.”

There is no risk of oil spill large scale like that was the case in 2002 when the Prestige disaster, which was carrying 77,000 tonnes of oil, part of which was spilled on French and Spanish coasts.

The hold is tight for the moment but breaches could occur in diesel bunkers cargo during the grounding. In this case, the anti-pollution plan Polmar, Sea and Earth will be triggered locally. The prefect said:

If there is a leak, we will confine the oil to dams and trawls around the diesel that flows to the sea, then treat this gas oil with absorbent and pumps, and of course we will clear as soon as possible the bunkers of ship diesel fuel they contain. “

Meanwhile, the Minister of Ecology Segolene Royal said Sunday that if leakage, would be mobilized “all means already there: civil security, labor maritime prefect, 70 specialized military, dams – wholesale socks you put the sea to prevent the spill to come” <. / p>
