The recorded music market, after a slight increase in 2013, began to decline (-5.3%) in 2014 but the streaming continues to grow strongly (+ 34%), said Tuesday the SNEP, main union of producers.
The new decline in the overall turnover of the disk sector in France (570 million euros in 2014) can be explained by a decrease of 11.5% of revenues in physical sales (CD, DVD, vinyl), which still account for just over 70% market share, according to the annual review of producers.
The decrease in Income music industry is a major trend for almost 15 years. Out “neighboring rights”, that is to say, the reproduction rights for private copying and TV and radio broadcasting rights (ie € 112 million in 2014), the market has now lost “almost 65% of its value since 2002 “when it reached 1.3 billion euros, said the SNEP.
Two million French subscribers streaming services
The Year 2013, marked by a small start, was atypical because of the exceptional success of Stromae, Master Gims and Daft Punk.
For producers, the reason for hope comes now of digital revenues (29% of total revenues in 2014), a sector where streaming, strong growth (+ 34%), now supplants download the act (down 14%). For the first time last year, the revenue generated by the streaming accounted for more than half of the digital revenue (55% against 43% in 2013).
Two million French (+ 35% compared to 2013) are now subscribed to an audio streaming service or directly via a monthly subscription to a platform (such as Deezer, Spotify and others) either via their phone plan, according to the SNEP.
“We are in a new revolution,” according to Guillaume Leblanc, managing director of SNEP, estimating that streaming “is becoming the new growth driver” of the music industry.
Another source of satisfaction: the good health of French song. Last year, “three-quarters (74%) of the market (excluding classic)” have been the result of the success of French-language productions. “A new level,” the SNEP.
The Top 10 best-selling albums in 2014 and is exclusively French, dominated by the inescapable Belgian Stromae (already first sales in 2013) before Kendji Girac and Indila.
