Alstom announces order for 28 trains for $ 2 billion in the US – Boursier.com

(Boursier.com) – Alstom and Amtrak signed a contract in which Alstom will design and build 28 new high-speed trains, which run on the Northeast Corridor (NEC) between Boston and Washington DC. Amtrak and Alstom also signed a long term contract in which Alstom will provide Amtrak technical support and spare parts and components for maintenance of new trains. These contracts amount to 1.8 billion euros ($ 2 billion) …

The line CNE covers approximately 730 km. In just ten years, the number of passengers increased from 2.4 million in fiscal year 2002 to 3,500,000 in fiscal year 2014. In order to renew and extend its premium range, Amtrak has decided to buy new trains to replace Acela trains currently in service, and increase the passenger capacity, provide more frequent service, reduce travel times and optimize operating costs and energy efficiency.

The latest

The train is operated by Amtrak Avelia Liberty, the latest in high-speed trains from Alstom Avelia range. The new train will carry 33% more passengers compared to the Acela trains. The train consists of a compact motor and new cars, with the possibility of adding three more in the event of increased demand. The train, capable of reaching a speed of 300 km / h will run initially at a maximum speed of 257 km / h, the speed limit of the CNE infrastructure. Each compact drive system is equipped with the innovative Crash Energy Management (CEM) of Alstom.

The oars Avelia Liberty for the CNE will be largely produced in the United States. The trains will be manufactured at Alstom’s historic site in Hornell, NY, 150 years old. Their maintenance will be performed in the Amtrak deposits in Boston, New York and Washington DC, as part of a spare parts supply contract and technical assistance with the support of New York Alstom sites in Delaware and Illinois for a period of 15 years, with a further 15 years for option.
