MADRID (Reuters) – The number of Spaniards registered as unemployed fell in July for the sixth consecutive month, but the overwhelming majority of hires was the result of temporary contracts, it is premature to say that the work of the fourth largest economy of the euro area market is really improving.
According to data released Tuesday by the Ministry of Labour, 93% of the 1 , 8 million work contracts are temporary established in July.
Overall, the number of registered unemployed decreased by 1.8% compared to June, 74,028 to 4.05 million .
The beginning of the tourist season usually results in a peak hiring and, with the record number of visitors expected this year, the summer should be prosperous.
The Department Labour does not communicate the unemployment rate but it rose to 22.4% at the end of June, the lowest in more than three years, according to the latest quarterly data of the National Statistics Institute (INE).
There are nearly a month, the Spanish government said it expected a decline in the unemployment rate to 21.1% by the end of the year and a passage under the threshold of 20 % in 2016.
The unemployment rate should be one of the major issues of the legislative elections scheduled for November in Spain. The Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, leader of the right-wing PP, hopes to be credited to the reduction of this rate to win a second term.
