MILAN, April 9 (Reuters) – Fiat Chrysler Automobiles FCHA.MI Wednesday announced plans to invest over 500 million euros in the production of new engines for its cars Alfa Romeo. The brand is part of the investment plan of 48 billion euros of Italian-American manufacturer, which has quintupled its earnings on the horizon of 2018, with global sales expected to increase 60% to seven million units. Fiat Chrysler plans to invest five billion in Alfa Romeo, the objective being to increase to 400,000 sales mark by 2018, against 74,000 in 2013, with the launch of eight new models. The first of these new models to be unveiled in June. Fiat bought Alfa Romeo with the public holding company IRI in 1986 but since then several attempts to revive the brand, which now includes three models have failed. The engines will be produced at the plant in Termoli, in southern Italy. (Agnieszka Flak, Benoit Van Overstraeten for the French service)
