Mohamed Morsi sentenced to 20 years in prison

Egyptian Islamist former President Mohamed Morsi, deposed in 2013 by the army, was sentenced Tuesday in Cairo 20 years in prison for his involvement in the arrest and torture of protesters during his tenure. He was however acquitted of inciting murder of two demonstrators and a journalist during a protest outside the presidential palace in 2012.

Similar terms for Twelve other defendants alongside Mohamed Morsi, mainly responsible for its Muslim Brotherhood and its then government, were sentenced to 20 years in prison for the same charges, having “used violence, arrested and tortured protesters” in margin a demonstration Dec. 5, 2012 before a presidential palace in Cairo. Two others were sentenced to 10 years in prison.

A more lenient justice Morsi? The 15 defendants were acquitted of counts of murder, a verdict that seems relatively mild against the death sentences handed down in other systematically trial against the main leaders of the Islamic Brotherhood Mohamed Morsi– but also against hundreds of his supporters.
