The European Commission has authorized, Friday, April 24, the import and marketing of seventeen GMOs for food and feed and two genetically modified carnation. The authorization, which is effective immediately, will be for ten years.
The Member States may, however, prohibit their use on their territory, according to a proposed reform Wednesday. Eleven products belong to the American multinational Monsanto

The Commission states that the authorizations concern products following:
- for maize: MON 87460
- to soybeans: MON 87705, MON 87708, MON 87769, 305423 and BPS-CV127-9
- for rape. MON 88302
- for cotton T 304-40, MON 88913 × LLCotton25 and GHB 614
To these are added 7 Renewals:
- for corn: 25 T and NK 603, rapeseed GT 73
- for cotton MON 531 × MON 1445 MON 15985, MON 531 and MON 1445 .
Finally, The Commission authorizes two transgenic cut flowers. Carnation IFD-IFD 26407-2 and 25958-3 lines

These authorizations were “on hold” , as member states had failed to form a majority or against their marketing.
If European governments approve the reform presented Wednesday, however, they can individually prohibit the use of GMOs on their territory. So far, the Commission authorized GMOs opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), but found himself consistently facing the hostility of the anti-GMO states and failed to obtain a qualified majority in the votes
The 19 States. – including France – to oppose GM crops could ban GM crops by taking on their territory safeguards or emergency measures for reasons Environmental and health. The capitals will now evoke agricultural policy grounds, land use and socio-economic consequences to prohibit the cultivation of GMOs.
