The European Union on Friday approved the import and marketing of GMOs 19, two days after having offered the Member States a reform allowing them to prohibit their use on their territory.

Eleven products of the American multinational Monsanto –plusieurs soybean varieties, corn, rapeseed and coton– are among authorized GMOs, said the Commission in a statement.

The other eight are products of the US firm Dupont and Bayer and BASF German groups.

Seventeen of these GMOs for food animal and human, two are cut flowers.

These authorizations “were pending” because Member States have failed to form a majority for or against commercialization. Permission is immediate and goes for ten years.

If European governments approve the reform presented Wednesday, they will ban the use of GMOs on their territory.

In the case otherwise, the rules will be those that have led the European Commission to authorize the marketing of GMOs are safe for animal and human health across the EU, solution demanded by large groups.

Greenpeace accused the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, “not intend to bring Europe closer to the citizens, as he has promised, and acting for the interests of States UNite and Monsanto “
