The Rhône no longer fund the museum of Confluences in Lyon in 2017 – The Point

The Rhône department has decided to no longer participate starting in 2017 the funding of the museum of Confluences, in Lyon, of which he was at the origin of the creation, said on Monday, confirming information on the regional daily Progress.

At the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône, the futuristic building, which has become one of the new most visited museums in the region, had been opened in December 2014 after years of work. It is past as soon as 2015 under the pavilion of the Metropolis of Lyon, chaired by Gérard Collomb (PS).

This new governance was the result of the division of competences of the former department of the Rhône between the new metropolis and the rural villages which do not fall within its scope and that form the new department of the Rhone.

The “new ” Rhône” has devoted to the museum € 1.2 million in 2016, or about 10% of its operating budget, which amounted overall to $ 18 million, of which € 14 million of government grants, the city (90% of these subsidies) leading to € 12.8 million.

the rest of The operating budget is supplied by the own income of the museum (tickets, mostly).

the chairman of The department, Christophe Guilloteau (LR), warranted this decision “by the need to achieve budgetary savings and re-deploy public money on the new territory of the Department of the Rhone”, according to The Progress.

Questioned by AFP, the Metropolis was not able to respond on Monday night.

The museum, which has reduced its appeal to public subsidies of 6% in 2016 compared to the previous year, has hosted some 875.000 visitors in 2015 and had already exceeded 500,000 at the end of August 2016, of which 17% are foreigners, said a spokesman.

The share of public subsidies is reviewed each year based on the revenue of the museum. After the withdrawal decision of the department of the Rhone, and the cuts budget, “we are on all of these points in a round of exchanges with the mainland, that is listening,” she assured.
