Religion is increasingly present in business, Le Figaro

VIDEO – Request for absence, working time, prayers… According to a study, 65% of employees say they have observed an increase of the religious fact in the company.

religion is in fact a place more within the company. This is what emerges from a survey carried out between April and June 2016 by the Institute Randstad and the Observatory of the religious Fact in the company (OFFER) announced on Thursday. 65% of employees say they have observed manifestations of the religious in the company, compared to 50% in 2015.

According to the authors of this study, this net increase reflects the fact that “the presence of the religious element asserts itself” and “becoming common” in companies, but “most of the time without a problem”. Even if Islam is mentioned often, all religions are concerned, provides the study. In 91% of cases, these religious beliefs are expressed through queries, and personal practices such as requests for absence for a religious festival or the organisation of working time (schedule, schedules), wearing ostentatious religious symbols and prayers during breaks. “It is the majority of cases and they do not hinder the work”, explains Lionel Honoré, university professor and director of the OFFER.

On the other hand, in some cases, the minority, are conflicting. The study figure these cases to 9% of the total of the facts observed in 2016, compared to 6% in 2015, 3% in 2014 and 2% in 2013. Among the situations are sources of conflict include the proselytism, the refusal to carry out certain tasks, to work with a woman or under his orders or demand to work only with co-religionists… These cases would be concentrated in certain sectors of the economy, the workforce, low-skilled (automotive oem, building and CONSTRUCTION, waste processing, large distribution, etc.) and in the geographic areas peri-urban areas.

About 48% of managers facing the issue of the expression of religious beliefs at work, they are 14% have had to deal with a fact in contention in 2016, compared to 12% in 2015, according to the study. The supervisors of field seem, however, better armed to deal with situations relating to the fact religious, with in particular a better knowledge of the legal framework. “They have more guides, make the difference between what comes from the religious radicalism and requests relating to their knowledge and managerial classic,” says the university.

“The respondents are open to pragmatic answers to the requests of employees with a religious dimension”

“The employees are banding together to impose their prayers during the work, they take ownership of places such as prayer rooms, are putting pressure on the manager by accusing him of islamophobia… It is to be taken very seriously because it is no longer a question of behavior, it is a challenge to the republican law and it is necessary to be very firm,” says Lionel Honoré. For him, “the company needs acts strong upstream policy”.

For the employees interviewed, no question, however, to impose a law on religion in the workplace. More than 60% of respondents are opposed to it. While the law of work stipulates that the internal regulations of the undertakings, may “contain provisions indicating the principle of neutrality and restrict the manifestation of beliefs of employees” under certain conditions, 65% of respondents are opposed to each other. They “do not wish that the company imposes on its employees the religious neutrality, in particular by means of an internal regulation”. “The respondents are open to pragmatic answers to the requests of employees with a religious dimension, but not what the company is organised according to religious rules”, comment the authors.

in addition, 80% of the people surveyed “are generally the religion of their colleagues, and 82% are “not embarrassed”. However, the “discomfort is significant increase: 18% against 8% in 2015″, according to the study.
