Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan was elected president in the first round of a disputed election for the first time by direct universal suffrage. He received 52.1% of the vote, according to preliminary results released by Turkish television.
As soon known these results, Mr. Erdogan, who led the country as de facto prime minister since 2003, went to the Eyüp Sultan Mosque historic Istanbul to pray, as did the Ottoman sultans before the throne. Final figures will be the presidential known in the course of the week.
From the seat of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the Islamic-conservative party, Erdogan called for reconciliation social. “I say this with the heart. Today begin a new period of social reconciliation and let the old discussions in the old Turkey,” he told thousands of his supporters.
Help Palestinians

In power until 2023?
Turkish media suggest that after counting 99% of ballots, the main opposition candidate, Ekmelettin Ihsanoglu, received 38.9% of the vote and that of the Kurdish minority, Selahattin Demirtas, around 9%. MM. Ihsanoglu Demirtas and both have acknowledged their defeat. But they denounced the “unjust” campaign or “disproportionate” led by their rival.
Even before his victory, Erdogan has made no secret that he wanted to retain control over the executive and strengthen the powers of the head of state, hitherto largely ceremonial. He also expressed a desire to stay on as president for two terms, until 2023, the year of the 100th anniversary of the Kemalist republic.
