This is not the first time that Fessenheim is found to a complete stop and unexpectedly. Last April, two incidents had already hit its two production units every few days. One was from a problem already sealing his pipe water supply.

Located on the edge of the Grand Canal of Alsace and has two reactors of 900 MW each, is the Fessenheim oldest power plant of the French nuclear fleet (since 1978). Because of his age including antinuclear demanding its closure and decommissioning for years. With the commissioning in 2017 of the EPR in Flamanville (Manche), Fessenheim should close, according to a campaign promise of Francois Hollande.

Saturday at 18h55, the production unit No. 1 “was shut down following a found leak in a pipe downstream of the condenser in the engine room (excluding nuclear zone),” said EDF in a statement.

“The teams from the Central currently conducting a diagnostic to identify the exact causes of this event,” said EDF, adding that it had “no impact on plant safety, environment and safety personnel. “

Since the night of Friday to Saturday, the second Fessenheim production unit is also stopped for several weeks. But that case was scheduled for maintenance and refueling.
