A small peak to lower tensions between Greece and … – Les Echos

Angela Merkel stated its opposition to Athens leaving the euro.
Twenty-Eight maintain their unity on sanctions against Russia.

Around the immense oval table of the European Council, the twenty-eight EU leaders began the summit with a minute of silence for the victims of Tunis. This morning, they will discuss the situation in Libya and the southern Mediterranean, but yesterday, the Heads of State and Government gave their violins on Ukraine. While economic sanctions against Russia in retaliation for attacks on the sovereignty of Ukraine expire in July, the European Council President Donald Tusk has proposed to link the sanctions to the cease-fire Minsk.

This is therefore to readjust their schedule on the Minsk, which provides for the acquisition by Kiev control its borders before the end of 2015. States have therefore accepted the principle of extending sanctions for six months, but most did not see fit to immediately formalize the extension. President Donald Tusk wished but lost the battle, some states (Hungary, Greece, Cyprus, Italy …) always have the urge to go back. As for France and Germany, they have preferred to keep the maximum margin vis-à-vis Moscow maneuver. Aware of the ravages of Russian propaganda, which pushes for the militarization of the country, they also asked the head of European diplomacy, Federica Mogherini, to develop a European against fire. The Baltic States wish to create such television programs to give the Russians a different perspective.

These heavy subjects mobilized European leaders all evening. But another folder, just as burning justified by the rising tensions between Europe and Greece, was waiting at the end of the Council. A small summit was held in the presence of François Hollande, Merkel and Alexis Tsipras. Which greatly displeased the small Benelux countries, who said they had not authorized Germany and France to negotiate on their behalf. Greek Prime Minister was still looking for a political gesture of its partners, to whom it takes time and resources to carry out its election platform.

A firmness of speech

The European Union needs bold policy initiatives that respect both democracy and treated to get rid of the crisis and move towards growth , “commented Alexis Tsipras on arrival in Brussels. Since the establishment of his government, he has still not received the promised financial assistance in exchange for the implementation of a specific list of reforms. Europeans are impatient: so far the only law passed by its Parliament on the social measures related to the “ humanitarian crisis ” that befell the country in recent years. “ What the Greek government makes efforts for the poor, is not it shocks me; what is asked for Greece is that it makes paying taxes to the richest , “replied Francois Hollande in Brussels.

Like other leaders, the head of state is concerned about the lack of ads on Greek fiscal and economic reforms. For its part, Greece has become increasingly difficult to repay its debt. Today, it has to pay € 336 million to the IMF and 1.6 billion to the holders of Treasuries. Europeans want to help ensure all Athens but maintain a firm speech. The Chancellor, who invited Alexis Tsipras in Berlin on Monday, tried to minimize the danger. Yesterday morning, she delivered a rousing speech to the Bundestag excluding unambiguously Greek exit from the euro. “ If the euro fails, Europe fails ,” she said. But in Brussels, she stressed that “it is not to be expected at a solution, a breakthrough ” at the mini-summit, referring any decision on the Eurogroup and the Finance Ministers .
