NEW YORK, Dec. 6 (Reuters) – A white truffle from Italy, described as the largest ever discovered, was sold 61,250 dollars (49,853 euros) auction Saturday in New York, said Sotheby’s.

The buyer tuber of 1.89 kg, is a Taiwanese, said the auction house.

The fungus was discovered last week in Italy by the company Sabatino Truffles, one of the main suppliers of this product.

The white truffles, among the most delicate products and most expensive in the world, only harvest in certain regions of Italy between October and December.

According to Sotheby’s, truffles sold Saturday pulverized the previous record from 2010, when a specimen almost half the size had been sold at 417,200 dollars during a charity dinner in Hong Kong.

Balestra family, owners of Sabatino Truffles, said she planned to donate the profits from the sale to charity. (Ellen Wulfhorst Patricia; Reaney; Mathilde Gardin for the French service)
