“Nein”, France is no longer the largest trading partner of Germany – L’Express

For forty years this had not happened. Since the mid 1970s, the Franco-German couple is first a couple of traders. The first being the largest trading partner of the other and vice versa. But in 2015, things have changed, the US having dethroned France as the first recipient of German production, in favor of a weak euro encouraged to drop by the policy of the ECB, but also a crisis economic that is slow to dissipate in France.

” in 2015, goods worth 173.2 billion euros were exchanged between Germany and the United STATES (exports and imports), “which made US” the most important trade partner of Germany “, followed by France (170.1 billion) and the Netherlands (167, 6 billion), details the federal statistics Office Destatis said in a statement.

it is also to the United States that Germany’s most exported in 2015, France, the first country customer of German products since 1961, rising to second place. It is China that Germany imported the most, France arriving only third behind the Netherlands.

The adjective “trading partner” was very often put forward to the praise of the Franco-German relationship and the strength of political and economic ties between the two countries.

But over the past year, the weakness of the euro against the dollar-which stimulates exports outside the Euro zone and the renewed strength of the US economy have greatly boosted trade between Germany and the United States. Germany, it should however be remained the largest trade partner of France, by far.
