Brussels – The European Commission on Tuesday welcomed the exchange between Greece and its creditors, working papers on the reforms that must be implemented by Athens for the release of a vital short-term financing for its economy.
Many documents were sent between institutions and the Greek authorities. (…) The fact that the documents to be exchanged is already a good sign, said Annika Breidthardt, the Commission’s spokesman for Economic Affairs.
She refused to confirm receipt a reform plan submitted by the Greek authorities Monday night to their creditors.
In terms of an agreement, we are not there yet, she stressed.
But there is clearly a desire to reach a political agreement this week, said an EU source familiar with the discussions. We are getting closer to solutions. There is a greater understanding on both sides, she added.
Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said Tuesday that his government had last night presented a comprehensive plan to creditors of the country, EU, ECB and IMF. He called the Greek proposals realistic. This would be a document of 46 pages, according to a Greek government source told AFP.
Without giving details on this new version of the list of budgetary measures and reforms presented by Athens, Mr. Tsipras spoke of the concessions that will be difficult.
During the night of Monday to Tuesday, an impromptu mini-summit brought together leaders in Berlin creditor institutions of Greece and François Hollande and Angela Merkel to discuss the Greek case. There is a strong political will not to let Greece explode, said a European source.
This event left to assume that a proposal could be made to the radical left government to unblock negotiations that last for months, on conditions of payment of the last tranche of loans that have hitherto been made in the country, amounting to 7.2 billion euros.
We are working to find a solution. That is why MM. Juncker, Merkel, Hollande, Draghi and Lagarde met Monday evening in Berlin. They made a point about the situation and will continue to stay in close contact, said Annika Breidthardt.
They agreed that further work intensively, she added, noting that discussions are also continuing at technical level.
The Commission also rejected the idea of disagreements within Greece’s creditors. The institutions talk to the Greek authorities with one voice, Ms. Breidthardt emphasized
Time is short:. The aid plan for Greece ends on 30 June and the absence of agreement, the country which can not be financed on the markets, except at prohibitive rates, will no longer receive financial assistance and may end up bankrupt.
Within the euro area, it is estimated that a principle of agreement must be reached by June 11, a week before the next meeting of finance ministers of the euro zone, scheduled in Luxembourg on 18 June, according to a source within the euro area.
This is the Eurogroup, which may decide the release of the Greek financial aid pending for months. This instance is ready to meet at any time, regularly reminds the European Commission.
Meanwhile, a conference of the Euro Working Group, the body that prepares Eurogroup, will be on Wednesday, followed a physical meeting next week
