Tesla unveils new electric car Model 3 and already panicked counters – TF1

To see the length of the queues, it’s like on the eve of the launch of a new iPhone. Potential buyers lined up for hours to buy a product they had not yet seen the color. Yet it is an ad that almost eclipsed that of the release of the iPhone OS from Apple Thursday. Tesla builder electric cars , launched pre-orders of its new car, the Model 3, before even having unveiled.

No doubt that this launch could mark a turning point in the history of American business. Often compared to Steve Jobs for his charisma and insurance, Elon Musk, Tesla boss sees his destiny and his company great. Long brand was synonymous with luxury cars, certainly revolutionary but overpriced. The arrival of the Model 3, the first affordable model and therefore public, could be as important as the first iPhone for Apple.

Preorders record blind

After the Model S (sedan) and Model X (crossover), Tesla will launch into production the Model 3, his car “for the mass market, affordable.” The base price is announced to 35,000 dollars (about 31,000 euros), two times less than its predecessors. “The final step of the plan”, as explained by Elon Musk when he finally revealed the lines of his little evening gem. He promised a small powerful model, the Model 3 should be able to travel at least 345 km on a single battery and will have a super-fast charging system (supercharger). With five fully fledged seats, to go from 0 to 100 km / h in under six seconds, it will be equipped in series of autonomous driving sensors “Autopilot”. However, the safety of support facilities will be operational without additional cost, promised Elon Musk.

In the morning preorders before dealers from around the world had begun, with the only information the first rumors outstanding on the features of the future vehicle. A box ! In one and a half (Australia began with reservations 9 am ahead of Europe), Tesla has registered more than 132 000 orders worldwide. No figures have been published to France, but the first hours are satisfactory. “It’s a sign that there is a great attraction around the brand. We did not set targets for France,” comments a spokesperson for the brand. “There is a great satisfaction to have seen clients from the early hours in front of the outlets and not only those who had a previous model, there were also people who will discover Tesla.”

No plant in Europe for the production

reservations debuted at retailers or online at the press conference. Each buyer has paid a deposit of 1,000 euros to make sure to be one of the future owners of Model 3. It will be possible at any time to cancel the reservation without charge. The vehicle is not available for the moment. It is still under development. The first models will not be delivered before the end of 2017 in the United States, beginning in 2018 in Europe. A few months before, each client receives an email inviting him to choose between the different variations (related to motor power) and options.

With a capacity to produce 500,000 vehicles at end year, but that turned so far to 10% of its abilities the plant in Fremont (California) will be well sole manufacturer Tesla models, we confirmed the company. No plant in Europe to provide immediate, despite efforts by the Alsatians in the last few weeks. Only one other plant was sought, the Giga Factory Reno (Nevada) who is in charge of the design of the vehicle batteries. “If ever there was proof that Tesla is ready to leap to the mainstream car buyers is this,” said Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds.com analyst firm. “To be a car manufacturer in its own right, Tesla needs volume, and the sooner the better. With hindsight, we can now look like a real historic moment for Tesla.” The buzz of the record pre-orders, queuing in front of the way to dealers iPhone launch or release of Star Wars, is a first sign.
