Transatlantic Treaty: advanced and doubts – The World

After the political will displayed earlier this week by President Barack Obama during his European tour, to complete an agreement quickly, the negotiators on the free trade treaty between the United States and the European Union (known as the Tafta or TTIP) have returned to more mundane concerns, Friday, April 29, after a thirteenth round of talks held in New York.

“We had a productive week, but there is still important work to do,” admitted Dan Mullaney, the chief negotiator American side, adding that the United States “have no interest” to achieve a “light” version of the Treaty.

his European counterpart, Ignacio Garcia Bercero, called for her part in “necessary concessions” to reach an agreement, implying that this is not the case and that the way to go is still long and complicated.

While both sides of the Atlantic, public opinion expressing growing concerns about the benefits of the treaty, which aims to create the largest free trade area in the world, here is an overview of the doubts surrounding the negotiations river.

launched in mid-2013, the negotiations on the TAFTA gave the impression to tread water because of an introductory phase eighteen months required to agree on the topics that would be discussed. Since late 2015, the negotiators went into the thick of it.
