Referendum: Greeks defied Europe by voting overwhelmingly “no”

Greeks defied Sunday Europe, overwhelmingly rejecting the referendum on the level of international creditors of their country. The poll result raises the question of keeping Greece in the euro area and accentuates the gap with “institutions”.

“no” won with 61.31%, against “38.69% credited to “Yes”, indicate the final results provided by the Greek Ministry of Interior. According to a survey released by the TV station Antenna, 67% of ballots “no” were dragged by young people aged 18 to 34 years. The turnout reached 62.5%.

While thousands of supporters of non loudly showed their joy in Athens, Berlin, on one side, and Paris and Rome, the another did not seem in sync on the reaction to be made. The Greek government pretended he, to see no problem on his return on Monday to the negotiating table.

Summit of the euro area Tuesday

The German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande were nevertheless “agree” to say he had to “respect the vote” of the Greeks. They called for a summit of the euro zone, which will take place on Tuesday at 18.00 in Brussels. The European Commission also said “respect the outcome” of the referendum.

While Merkel remained silent, the German economy minister, Sigmar Gabriel, said it was “difficult to imagine” further negotiations with Athens in these circumstances. He even considered that the Greek Prime Minister radical leftist Alexis Tsipras had “cut the last bridges” between his country and the European Union.

The head of the Eurogroup Jeroen Dijsselbloem, has meanwhile he felt the vote “very regrettable for the future of Greece.” Slovak Finance Minister Peter Kazimir affirmed for his part that now a Greek exit from the eurozone was a “realistic scenario”.

But Mr Tsipras assured his countrymen that the result the referendum did not score at all, “a break with Europe,” but rather “a stronger bargaining power” of his government. He said that “this time the debt would be on the table” of the negotiations.

The uncertainty about the course of events is total. Greece has more money, banks are closed for a week, and weakened by the recent massive withdrawals from anxiety Greeks of this situation
