7 million pounds, an additional EUR 10 million. The British Home Secretary Theresa May announced Tuesday an extension to enhance security of Eurotunnel terminal in Coquelles boarding (northern France) after a meeting with his French counterpart Bernard Cazeneuve.
This announcement comes as about 1200 migrants, police, tried to go on the site of the Channel Tunnel on the night of Monday to Tuesday, the most significant attempt for over a month and half. “With France, we work closely together on a situation that affects both our countries. France has already strengthened its police presence. The UK government will allocate an additional 7 million pounds for security in Coquelles,” said Theresa May. These seven million pounds in addition to the 15 million already announced earlier by London to strengthen security around ports.
“Discourage migrants”
France and Britain reached an agreement in September on the “management of migratory pressure” in Calais, with the creation of a special fund. “With our British partners, we co-fund a number of security infrastructure, including transport, to fully deter migrants to come to Calais. They must know that there is no possibility to cross the sea of the Channel and we will act together to make it understood, “Cazeneuve said.
Migrants from intrusion attempts on the Eurotunnel site became daily in recent weeks and least eight migrants have already lost their lives within the site or trying to get there from early June. According to the latest official count in early July, about 3,000 migrants, mostly Eritreans, Ethiopians, Sudanese and Afghans seeking to reach England, are listed in the Calais region.
