Greek referendum. Greeks to vote for their future in the euro – Ouest-France

The referendum could pave the way for a possible exit from the euro zone countries after five years of austerity.

In a context of strong tension between Athens and Europeans and fear of a financial collapse, the Opinion surveys have failed to identify a trend clear on the eve of the elections to be observed in all Western capitals.

The country split into two

The Greeks appear divided between supporters of the “no” advocated by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has called for refuse a “humiliation” and supporters of “yes” convinced a “Grexit” would be worse than the pursuit a program budgetary rigor.

For creditors and European partners, a victory of the “no” would open the door to a Greek exit from the euro area and would affect all financial markets.

“Sunday, we must send a message of democracy and dignity to the whole world” has said Alexis Tsipras to tens of thousands of supporters before the end of the campaign.

The breathless people

This is a population angry and exhausted by the measures austerity that is required to decide when the Government introduced capital controls and ordered closure of banks since Monday.

“There is an atmosphere of fear. We can feel it” says Giorgos Sarafianos, an Athenian teacher 60 declares to support the proposal of the creditors International.

The polling stations open at 7:00 (0400 GMT) and will close at 19:00 (16:00 GMT). Initial projections official should be available from 21:00 (1800 GMT).

Four polls published Friday gave a narrow lead in favor of the “yes” while a fifth provides a win the “no” with a margin of 0.5 index points. The proponents of the “yes” believe that the proposals “institutions” ahead with painful back, but that out of the zone euro and a return to the drachma would be a much worse scenario.

Nightmare

On the eve of the vote, Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said that in case of victory of “no”, the creditors will have no choice but to grant Greece aid terms more favorable, including significant debt relief and less austerity.

In case of victory of “yes” and Varoufakis Tsipras should resign opening a new phase of uncertainty while that local political parties attempt to agree to form a national unity government.

Another concern is related to a narrow victory or the other that would add to the confusion and may result by violent demonstrations rather than with a clear expression of the intentions of the Greek people.

“The nightmare would be a 51-49 result in favor of one side or the other” has ruled a German official. “And the chance to attend it are not thin” .
