Anne Hidalgo may be smiling, Paris is considered the fourth most attractive city in the world, up two places since 2014, according to research firm Board PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), “Cities of Opportunity” published this September 7th. Light city lags behind London which occupies the top spot, Singapore and Toronto. And behind Paris, we find Amsterdam and New York, which fell four places.
A very good result for the French capital yet so often criticized for its lack of dynamism, the high cost of rents, lack attractiveness for start-ups, etc … But it is true that Paris still sins a bit on some of these points.
Overall, about thirty cities in competition, is in Paris lead car whatever the criteria. It’s the only city to be ranked in the “top 10″ for nine families of ten criteria. These criteria are also very diverse: economic power, transport and infrastructure, technological readiness, cultural influence, etc.
Paris 1st for quality of life
Once back in. detail, some results are sometimes surprising … especially for Parisians. Thus, Paris holds first place tie with New York in terms of “quality of life”. The French capital welcomed to the mesh of its transport (1st place), cultural vitality (2nd) or its public gardens … (3rd). Note that two years ago Paris was in 7th position. It is true that since then there had including the pedestrianization of ways on bank to the left bank.
It is also distinguished as a venue with its infrastructure for both tourists leisure and business. Light city loses however its leading place for its “intellectual capital and innovation.” It is only third.
It remains primarily driven by its educational system and its universities, but is held back by its “ entrepreneurial environment .” “ France in general and Paris in particular, has a capacity for innovation that is clear, but we must succeed in transforming our researchers contractors “, commented to AFP Fabien Goffi associated public sector at PwC FranceGoffi.
Paris slightly behind in the economic field
It is true that this is the economic component that Paris is less well placed, even if it’s relative. Thus, Paris occupies the 7th place respectively in terms of productivity, the 9th for foreign investment and the 3rd to the headquarters. But other indicators, less favorable, as the growth and jobs that are ultimately Paris falling four places (the 8th) for the economic criterion.
Finally, another point not surprisingly Parisians. Paris is the fourth most expensive city for business as for households, particularly in housing. But Paris is also in 9th position in terms of purchasing power through higher wages.
Paris is therefore classified, but “can still do better”, especially in the economic field. As for the city star, London, it will be interesting to see if the Brexit will affect its considerable appeal
