The tourists in hotels and other collective accommodation in France fell sharply in the second quarter (-4.8% yoy), according to a study released Friday by INSEE. At issue: the disaffection of foreign customers after the attacks, bad weather and fewer holidays.
In the first quarter, the number of tourists had yet regained some strength after the downturn linked to the attacks of November 2015 in Paris, INSEE even slightly raising its first estimate to + 1.1%. But tourism has again suffered from April to June, with in particular a decrease overseas clients in hotels, campsites and other accommodations (-8.5%).
The attack in Nice dampened foreign
This decline “more significant than the first quarter (-2.7%) is comparable to that in the fourth quarter of 2015, after the November attacks, “said INSEE. The effects of terrorism on French tourism are further amplified in the third quarter after the bombing of Nice, which has slowed a little foreign.
“Two holidays in 2016 against five the previous year and unfavorable weather penalized in tourism in April and May,” suggests otherwise INSEE. “The decline in June was more moderate thanks to the positive impact of Euro 2016 in the cities that have hosted the games,” says the institute.
The Paris area affected
As for hotels, only those located in provincial towns increased their overnight stays (+ 1.5%), ” thanks in part to the lure of the football Euro on French as a foreign clientele. ”
The attendance in other collective accommodation tourism has again sharply in the second quarter (-6.4% year on year), again with a greater impact in the Paris area. The season is itself qualified by INSEE of “difficult” for campsites with attendance down by 6.8% in the second quarter, mainly because of the gloomy weather.
