The French branch of WWF wishes “influence the use of natural raw materials by acting on the supply chains” . In his study, the French branch of the NGO to do this identified and studied, since 2010, 16 renewable raw materials “whose operating modes directly threaten its 35 priority ecoregions” .
the retail operates 14 of the 16 commodities sensitive
the big names in distribution are at the top of the table. Their presence in this sad record is due to “a turnover linked to purchases, sales or processing of these renewable resources” . Carrefour, Auchan, Casino, E. Leclerc, Système U and Les Mousquetaires are tied. They exploit all 14 of the 16 relevant renewable raw materials: soy, palm oil, beef, shrimp farmed and wild shrimp, farmed salmon, tuna, white fish and food fish, dairy products, sugar cane, wood , pulp and cotton. Only rubber (natural rubber) and biomaterials escape their processing lines
Sodexo and Elior, the French leaders in the catering, the little tailgating. Except wood, they use the same materials first.
9 CAC 40 companies in the list of 25
wood is logically spared the catering companies but it is found among the raw materials used by others giants of French industry, including Bolloré groups (energy), Adeo (signs around the habitat) and members of the CAC 40, Bouygues (construction), Vinci (BTP) and Saint-Gobain (building materials).
in the top 25 of WWF France, the list of CAC 40 companies (main index of the Paris stock Exchange), is supplemented by L’Oréal, Danone, Total, Michelin, Carrefour and Sodexo.
Turning the Tables with certified raw materials
WWF France has identified these companies as priorities for market transformation: they must change as quickly as their procurement patterns. The organization has in its 2014/2015 report a solution for a party of 16 resources: choosing raw materials generally designated by barbarians English acronyms, but that can all together under the label “certified” FSC wood ; RSPO palm oil; MSC and ASC fish; the RTRS soy; BCI cotton and sugarcane Bonsucro.
Above all, keep in mind that humans consume in eight months natural resources renewed by the Earth in a year.
