India orders 56 Airbus military aircraft and Tata – The World

According to a senior Indian official speaking anonymously, the Department of Indian defense Wednesday, May 13 gave the green light to the command 56 military transport aircraft Airbus and the Tata group; a contract to replace aging models and estimated at $ 1.87 billion.

The offer of the European aircraft manufacturer and Tata Advanced Systems was the only race. The project approved by the acquisition of the Defence Ministry Board expects Airbus to deliver the first 16 units, the C295 “ready to fly”, while the remaining 40 will be assembled in the city of Hyderabad (south of the India) by Tata, which would allow a transfer of technology.

This contract was approved late Wednesday night with other orders totaling approximately $ 875 million, said the ministry official told AFP. Other orders include 145 mortars ultralight BAE Systems, missile BrahMos Indian-Russian cruise and 197 Russian Kamov helicopters, according to the Indian official.

The council, chaired by the Minister of Defence , Manohar Parrikar, also installed the committee to negotiate the details of 36 Dassault Rafale that India plans to order. This order was announced by Narendra Modi during his visit to France in mid-April, a decision that terminated the negotiations initiated in 2012 for the purchase of 126 Rafale, 108 manufactured in India.

Since coming to power the government of Narendra Modi there a year, India is trying to modernize all of its defense equipment, especially to be able to react to the initiatives of its neighbors and rivals, Pakistan and China. Devout Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi wants India, the world’s largest importer of conventional weapons, on its soil produces 70% of its military equipment by the end of the decade.
