It’s a historic marriage in supermarkets. The two giants Auchan and Système U will soon merge. The group would then become No. 2 in the market, while “Auchan and U system are 5th and 6th today” , says journalist Margaux Way, on the plateau of France 2. “They are too small in the context of the price war,” added the reporter.
This union is good news for consumers. They can expect to see prices fall. This marriage should however be welcomed by month suppliers “already strangled in the price war” , notes the journalist.
This merger is not an exception in the world supermarkets. The Casino and Rallye stores merged in 1992, while Carrefour Promodes married in 1999.
