The number of fraudulent transactions has decreased in France. But it continues to grow abroad.
This is a first. The fraud credit card declined last year for payments made in France with a French card, see the Observatory of the security of payment cards. The fraud concerned a little over 4 transactions 10,000 (0.043% instead of 0.046% a year earlier). The amounts defrauded also decreased by 4 million euros, from 235 million euros. Only downside, the withdrawals from ATMs continued to increase slightly (0.034% of the fraud).
In general, “this positive evolution is due to the widespread in France and Europe in the use of the smart card, but also in strong authentication dynamic deployment,” explains Christian Noyer, Governor of the Bank of France and President of the Observatory. The particularly strong authentication for payments online. These type devices “3D Secure”. It requires the purchaser to confirm a purchase, indicating a single-use code sent by SMS by his bank. Although declining for three years, fraud on remote payments (mainly Internet) remains relatively high (0.248% instead of 0.010% for payments in shops). These payments, which represented 11.6% of the value of national transactions, concentrating 66.5% of the amount of the fraud. Some sectors are particularly vulnerable. “The telephony and communications sector is sustainably a much higher fraud rates than average,” says the Observatory.
Purchases on foreign e-commerce sites are by far the most issues (9.1 Payments Online 1000 fraudulent in Europe and 9.6 in the rest of the world). “Fraud with foreign online retailers has increased dramatically in 2014, representing 104.5 million, against 81.2 million euros in 2013,” says the Observatory.
The International remains the black point of the security of means of payment. Fraud on purchases made abroad still increased sharply (+ 15% from 2013 to 266,000,000 euros). For the first time, they represented more than half (53.1%) of the total amount of fraud, while they accounted for only 13.5% of transactions.
In contrast, contactless payment does not seem to pose any particular problem. Cards with this device, to pay without compose his secret code, are not pirated more than the others (0.015% were). In total, over the first nine months of last year, 108,000 euros were withdrawn to individuals who had lost or had stolen their card. This should reassure consumers who are worried about the possible diversion of their card, they can, however, request to their bank to withdraw this function. Across all operations, 905,600 French bank cards have been victims of at least one piracy last year (+ 5.2%), for an average loss per transaction 112 euros (116 euros in 2013). In the end, 500.6 million euros (+ 6.5% compared to 2013) were hacked in 2014.
